For children and young people

Your learning belongs to you. Here is what Silicon knows about it.

This is the shorter, simpler version of our privacy information. You can read it yourself, with a parent or carer, or with another adult you trust.

Private by defaultNo public learner profile

Your learning profile is not a public social-media page.

No ad trackingWe do not sell your learning data

Silicon does not use your mistakes or scores to target third-party adverts at you.

You can askQuestions are allowed

You can ask what we know about you, correct it, or ask us to delete information where the law allows.

1. What information do we use?

We need some information to make Silicon work. This can include your name, email, school year group, the lessons you complete, answers you give, scores, mistakes, mastery and assignments.

If you use Studio, we also use information needed for your teaching room, such as who is in the room, whiteboards, shared notes, resources and lesson summaries. Live chat messages are sent to the other people in the room but are not currently saved by Silicon as part of your lesson history.

2. Why do we use learning information?

Academy looks at your recent learning to choose useful practice and adjust difficulty. This is meant to help you learn, not to label you as a person or target adverts at you.

A Silicon recommendation does not decide your grade, school admission, job or credit. You can choose other published learning content instead. Your tutor may also see learning evidence that is relevant to your lesson and can use their own judgement instead of simply following a Silicon recommendation.

3. Who can see my information?

People only get access when there is a reason connected to your learning or running the service. Depending on your account, that can include your assigned tutor, a linked parent or carer, your school or tutoring organisation, authorised Silicon administrators, and the service providers needed to run Silicon.

Your Settings page shows the tutor, parent/carer and organisation relationships Silicon currently knows about. A linked parent or school administrator does not automatically get to join your private Studio room. We do not make a public profile showing your progress, and we do not sell your personal information.

4. What happens in a live Studio lesson?

Your camera and microphone are used to carry the live lesson when you turn them on. Silicon does not record lessons by default. Screen sharing only starts when you choose to share a screen or window.

Whiteboards, lesson notes and other teaching evidence may be saved so that the room can remember the learning. Be careful not to put passwords, private financial information or anything unnecessarily sensitive into a chat, whiteboard, note or upload.

5. Things Silicon does not need to do

  • We do not use your learning profile for third-party behavioural advertising.
  • We do not need your location to teach you, and the Silicon website disables geolocation access.
  • We do not have public learner profiles.
  • We do not secretly record Studio lessons.
  • We do not want you to share passwords or unnecessary sensitive information.

For a paid learner Academy subscription, someone aged 18 or over must complete or approve the purchase. Learner accounts can only buy Academy directly at launch; Studio access for a learner comes through an authorised teaching relationship.

6. What can I ask us to do?

You can ask us to explain what information we have about you. You can download a copy of your core account and learning data from Silicon settings. You can also ask for information to be corrected, and in some situations you can ask for it to be deleted or for how it is used to be limited.

If you permanently delete your Silicon account, we remove your live account and account-linked learning information. Some very small records may have to stay for longer - for example a hashed record showing that we carried out the deletion, billing/tax evidence, or a safeguarding record that still needs to be kept. Deleted database information can also remain in protected backup copies until those backups expire, but it must not be brought back into ordinary use.

Email contact@siliconacademy.co.uk. If you are younger, you can ask a parent, carer or another trusted adult to help you, but your privacy rights still matter.

If you do not understand something on this page, ask us. Privacy information should make sense to you, not only to adults.

7. If something in a lesson makes you feel unsafe

You can leave the lesson, tell a parent, carer, teacher or another adult you trust, and report the concern to Silicon. Read our Safeguarding and online safety policy for the reporting route.

If someone is in immediate danger, contact the emergency services rather than waiting for Silicon to reply.

8. Want the full details?

The full Privacy notice explains the legal bases, service providers, international transfers, retention and formal data-protection rights in more detail.
